Gogo Grandmothers Donate Mary Escamilla

“Mary Escamilla retired from teaching, but she never retired from her love for children! Mary joined a Gogo Grandmothers Group in San Diego that assists grandmothers raising orphans from the AIDS pandemic in Malawi Africa — one of the poorest countries in the world. Mary took over the leadership of the San Diego Gogo group in 2011 and traveled to Malawi in 2013 and 2104. On her first trip she led a training for girls in how to make “washable menstrual pad kits” to help poor Malawian girls stay in school and not miss classes because they had no protection. That training has continued and has impacted thousands of young women. On her second trip Mary went to teach preschool teachers a curriculum that went with large, beautiful Bible Story Banners that are now being used in 22 preschools that care for over 2,000 orphans and vulnerable children. In 2015 and 2016 there was a drought in Malawi and Mary helped to raise funds to buy maize for those in danger of starvation. Mary never thought the need was too big to be able to make a difference… she knew one person, doing just one thing, can make a difference!” – Leslie Lewis, US Coordinator for Gogo Grandmothers
